4th Apr 2021: Back to Business

Oh man, it’s been a while. I didn’t feel like writing on my vacation, and ever since I got back to Buffalo getting into my working rhythm is proving to be near impossible. I’m doing better now though, just have to accept that I made mistakes and move on, which is the only way to right the situation.

I spent most of the quarantine in Bengaluru refining my fan design. As a quick reminder; I have been working on a 120mm fan design to be submitted to Major Hardware’s Fan Design contest on YouTube. Its design deserves its own post and maybe a video (unfortunately I don’t have design footage, but I can do a walkthrough), but here’s a pic of the first 4 iterations.

Evolution of the fan design

The fifth iteration is what I eventually submitted (just before coming back to Buffalo, cheers procrastination) and I’ve put a picture of the printed prototype. I really like how it came out and hope it features on the contest!

Introducing the Windraker!

In other news, I made some progress on the OpenRC F1 2022 (I’m just gonna call it the ORC 2022 from now on, seems less tedious) rear wing, but it’s infuriating to spend a couple hours designing only to find a wind tunnel pic and realizing how hilariously oversimplified my model is. I have an obsession for detail, and this really demotivated me. I’m trying to get back and finish the model, and hopefully putting it like this makes me realize how silly the excuses I make for not completing the design are.

I’ve also been trying to put more regular content on Twitter. It’s a platform which I started using for this purpose fairly recently, and safe to say I’ve got a lot to learn. Right now I either put up progress updates for some projects, or just to post random thoughts and new ideas. This is to help build up a habit of posting regularly, so that I get a bit more engagement eventually.

One positive is that I managed to get my Ender 3 to Buffalo, and with the upgrades it is working beautifully. I love the removable bed, and the dual gear extruder is super reliable regardless of the filament. I have gotten to the point where after the first layer I can leave most prints by themselves and work on something else (which is hard to do, watching the printer go is hypnotizing :))

But overall, this is more of a refresher post. I’ll start writing weekly blogs again from now on, and hopefully won’t break the habit for a while. Might be that I’ll do some special posts, like the one for the fan design. Till next time!
